Faults That Shouldn't Wait Until Monday
If there is smoke or fire, get everyone out and call 911 first. Otherwise, turn off the breaker for the affected circuit if you can do it safely, stop using it, and call us:
- A burning or fishy smell near an outlet, switch or the panel
- Scorch marks, discolouration or melted plastic on a device
- An outlet, switch plate or the panel that is warm or hot to the touch
- Buzzing, crackling or sizzling from a panel, switch or outlet
- Sparks when you plug something in — beyond the tiny normal flash
- A tingle or shock from an appliance, fixture or faucet
- A breaker that trips immediately every time you reset it
Every one of these points to arcing, overheating or a fault to ground. None of them improve on their own.
We Diagnose The Fault, Not Just The Symptom
Most electrical repair calls start with a symptom — a breaker that keeps going, a room with no power, lights that flicker when the AC kicks in. The symptom is rarely where the problem is. A breaker tripping on a bedroom circuit can be a failing breaker, a shorted lamp cord, a nail through a cable from a picture hung two years ago, or a genuinely overloaded circuit. Those are four different repairs at four different prices.
So we test before we quote. We isolate the circuit, check the load, open the boxes on the run, and find where the fault actually is. Then you get told what it is and what fixing it costs — before we start.
Sometimes the honest answer is that the repair is a patch on something bigger. A panel with several failing breakers, or a circuit that trips because the whole service is at its limit, is not really a repair problem. When that's the case we'll say so and show you the reasoning rather than selling you a repair that comes back in six months.
Electrical Problems We Repair In Calabasas
Breakers That Keep Tripping
Overload, short, ground fault, or a breaker worn out from cycling. We identify which one it is rather than fitting a bigger breaker, which hides the problem and creates a worse one.
Dead Outlets & Dead Circuits
A room or run with no power. Usually one failure point — a tripped GFCI upstream, a loose back-stab connection, or a failed device breaking the chain. We trace the circuit to find it.
Flickering & Dimming Lights
Loose connections at devices or in the panel, a failing breaker, or a utility-side issue. Persistent flicker means arcing somewhere, which is why it's worth diagnosing rather than tolerating.
GFCI & AFCI Faults
Devices that trip repeatedly or won't reset — often genuine moisture faults on exterior, bathroom, kitchen or pool circuits, sometimes a device that has simply aged out.
Overheating & Arcing Connections
Warm outlets, scorched devices, burning smells and buzzing. The highest-priority category, and the one we hold same-day slots for.
Faulty Switches, Outlets & Fixtures
Switches that don't respond, three-way circuits that only work from one side, loose receptacles that no longer grip a plug, and fixtures that flicker or cut out.
Pool, Spa & Exterior Circuit Faults
Wet-location circuits are the ones that fail most. GFCI faults, corroded connections, bonding problems and failed equipment circuits at pool and spa equipment pads.
Panel Component Failures
Individual breaker replacement, loose bus connections, corroded lugs and failed main breakers. Where the panel itself is the problem, we'll tell you that too.

What's Different About Repair Calls In Calabasas
First Question: Is It Even Your House?
In Calabasas that isn't a throwaway question. Between Public Safety Power Shutoffs and fire-season outages on the Southern California Edison network, a fair number of "my power is out" calls here turn out to be utility-side. We establish which side of the meter the fault is on before charging you to chase something that isn't yours to fix.
Arcing Faults Carry More Weight In A Fire Zone
Much of Calabasas sits in a Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone. An overheating connection or an arcing device is a serious problem anywhere; here the calculation is different. It's why we treat burning smells, scorch marks and buzzing as same-day calls rather than something to book in next week.
Pool And Exterior Circuits Fail First
Pool and spa density here is high, and wet-location circuits are where faults show up soonest — GFCI tripping at the equipment pad, corroded connections, bonding that's degraded over the years. Long exterior runs across large lots add more places for a fault to hide.
Gate Access Affects How Fast We Actually Arrive
In the gated communities, response time isn't just drive time. Guest authorisation, gate codes and after-hours access rules all matter on an urgent call. Tell us the community when you phone and we'll sort the access while we're on the way rather than waiting at the gate.
Describe What's Happening And We'll Tell You What It Means
Phone is faster than a form for a fault. Tell us the symptom, when it started and what's on that circuit — we'll tell you whether it's urgent, what it's likely to be, and what to stop doing until we get there.
How A Repair Call Runs
- 1
Tell Us The Symptom
What's happening, when it started, what's on the circuit, and whether anything is warm, smells or makes a noise. That last part decides whether it's a same-day call.
- 2
On-Site Diagnosis
We isolate the circuit, test it under load, open the boxes on the run and check the panel. The point is to find the fault, not to guess at it from the symptom.
- 3
What It Is And What It Costs
You get told what we found, what fixing it involves, and the price — before the repair starts. Including whether it's a patch or a real fix.
- 4
The Repair
Fault corrected, failed components replaced, connections made properly rather than back-stabbed, and the circuit brought back into service.
- 5
Test And Explain
We test the circuit under load, check nothing else on the run is affected, and explain what caused it so you know whether it's likely to recur.

Electrical Fault Questions From Calabasas Homeowners
Why does my breaker keep tripping?
A tripping breaker is doing its job — something is drawing more current than the circuit can safely carry, or there's a fault. The usual causes are an overloaded circuit, a short in the wiring or in a plugged-in device, a ground fault, or a breaker that has simply worn out from repeated cycling. Resetting it over and over without finding the cause is the risky part. If it trips more than once, or the panel is warm or smells hot, stop resetting it and call a licensed electrician.
What does an emergency electrician cost?
Emergency and after-hours work is priced differently from scheduled work because of the callout. What it comes to depends on the time, the fault and the parts needed. ADI also lists a two-hour electrical labour inspection at $199, which covers diagnosis and small repairs during normal hours. Call and describe what's happening — we'll tell you upfront whether it's a same-day job, what the callout involves, and whether there's anything you should do (or stop doing) before we arrive.
What should I do if I smell burning or see scorching at an outlet?
If there is smoke or fire, get everyone out and call 911 first. Otherwise, stop using that outlet or switch immediately, unplug anything connected to it if you can do so safely, and turn off the breaker for that circuit. Don't use the circuit again until an electrician has looked at it. A burning smell or scorch marks usually means an overheating connection or arcing, and both get worse rather than better. This is a same-day call.
Why do my lights flicker or dim when appliances start?
A brief dip when a large motor starts — an air conditioner, a pool pump — can be normal on a service that's close to its limit. Persistent flickering is different, and usually points to a loose connection at a device, in a junction box or at the panel, a failing breaker, or a problem on the utility side. Loose connections arc, and arcing is a fire risk, so recurring flicker is worth diagnosing rather than living with.
Half my house has no power but no breaker has tripped. What is wrong?
Losing roughly half the circuits with nothing tripped usually points to one of the two legs of your service. Common causes are a failed main breaker, a loose or burnt connection in the panel or meter, an open service neutral, or a utility-side fault on one leg. Some of those are on your side of the meter and some are SCE's. Don't start resetting things — call, and we'll establish which side the fault is on before anything else.
Why does my GFCI outlet keep tripping or refuse to reset?
A GFCI trips when it detects current leaking to ground, so repeated tripping usually means a genuine fault somewhere downstream — often moisture in an exterior, bathroom, kitchen or pool-area circuit. If it won't reset at all, either there's no power reaching the device, the fault is still present, or the GFCI itself has failed, which they do with age. Because GFCIs protect the outlets downstream of them, one failed device can take out several outlets at once.
The outlets in one room stopped working. What causes that?
Most often it's a single point of failure feeding the rest of the run. The usual suspects are a tripped GFCI upstream in another room, a loose back-stabbed connection at one outlet that has broken the daisy chain, a failed device, or a tripped AFCI breaker. We trace the circuit to find the actual break rather than replacing outlets one at a time and hoping.
