Recessed lighting installation

Recessed lighting installation in Los Angeles

Recessed lights change a room more than almost any other electrical job, and they do it without taking up a single inch of space. Done well, the ceiling looks like the light was always meant to be there. Done badly, you get hot spots, dark corners, cracked drywall and a dimmer that buzzes. The difference is planning and clean work, which is what we do.

A.D.I. Electrical Services is a licensed C-10 electrical contractor, LIC# 977443, installing recessed lighting across Los Angeles and the west San Fernando Valley. Our shop price is $595 for four new recessed lights with a dimmer switch installed. Call (866) 561-7545 to book, or read on for how we approach it.

What $595 for four lights includes

The shop package covers four recessed LED lights and a dimmer switch, with the labour and materials to install them. That means the layout, the cuts, the wiring back to a switch, the fittings themselves and a dimmer matched to them. It is a real fixed price for a common job, a single room done properly, not a teaser that grows once we arrive. Larger rooms, higher ceilings, and homes that need a new circuit run are quoted after we see the space, and we give you that number before we start.

Getting the layout right

The most common mistake with recessed lights is spacing them like a grid on graph paper and ending up with scallops of light and shadow. We plan the layout around what the room is for. General lighting gets even spacing so the whole floor is lit without dark patches. A kitchen wants light over the counters where you actually work, not over the middle of the floor. A living room may want a softer wash plus a light aimed at art or a fireplace. We walk the room with you before we cut anything, because a hole in the ceiling is not easy to move later.

Local permits and inspections

We install LED recessed fittings. They run cool, which matters in a ceiling with insulation above it, they last for years, and they draw a fraction of the power of the old halogen cans. Colour temperature is a real choice, not a detail. Warmer light around 2700 to 3000 kelvin suits living rooms and bedrooms. A cooler, brighter light suits kitchens, garages and work areas. We will show you the difference so the room feels the way you want, rather than guessing and living with it.

The dimmer is part of the job, not an extra

A dimmer is what makes recessed lighting flexible, bright when you are cooking, low when you are relaxing. It only works cleanly when the dimmer is matched to the LED fittings. The wrong pairing is where the flicker and the hum come from, and it is one of the most common complaints we are called out to fix after someone else’s install. We supply and fit a dimmer rated for the lights we put in, so it dims smoothly across the full range.

Recessed lighting in kitchens and bathrooms

Kitchens and bathrooms have their own rules. Over a kitchen counter you want light landing on the work surface, not on the back of your head, so the fittings sit forward of the upper cabinets rather than tight against the wall. Bathrooms bring moisture, which means any fitting over a shower or tub has to be rated for a wet or damp location. We use the correct rated fittings in those spots rather than a standard downlight, because a dry-rated light over a shower is both a code failure and a real hazard.

Permits and doing it properly

Adding lighting circuits or extending wiring is work that the City of Los Angeles and the surrounding jurisdictions expect to be permitted and inspected. As a licensed contractor we pull the permit where the job calls for one and leave the work in a state that passes inspection. That protects you when you sell, and it means the wiring in your ceiling was done to code, not to whatever was quickest.

Insulation contact and older ceilings

Many Los Angeles homes have insulation sitting directly on the ceiling. A recessed light that is not rated for insulation contact is a fire risk when it is buried in it. We use fittings rated for the ceiling they are going into. In older homes, and the Valley has plenty of them, we also check what is above the ceiling before we cut, because joists, ducts and old wiring do not always sit where you would hope. Lath and plaster ceilings need a different, more careful approach than modern drywall, and we cut for the ceiling we actually find.

Clean cuts and honest drywall work

Recessed lighting means holes in your ceiling, and the quality of those cuts is the difference between a finished look and a patch job. We measure, cut clean, and set the fittings flush. Where a light lands on a joist or an obstruction, we adjust the plan rather than force it and leave you with a mess. If any drywall repair is needed around the work, we tell you before we start so there are no surprises above your head.

Lighting that works with the rest of your home

Recessed lights are often the start of a larger lighting plan. If you are thinking about landscape lighting, which we install from $749, or adding switches and outdoor fixtures at the same time, it is usually cheaper to plan them together than to open the same walls twice. We are happy to look at the whole picture and tell you what makes sense to do now and what can wait.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our fixed price is $595 for four new recessed LED lights with a dimmer switch, including labour and materials for a standard single-room install. Larger rooms, high ceilings or a new circuit run are quoted after we see the space, and you get the number before any work starts.

It depends on the room size, the ceiling height and what the room is used for. Rather than fill a ceiling with lights, we plan around where light is actually needed, even general lighting for a living area, focused light over kitchen counters. We work the layout out with you before cutting.

Yes, when the dimmer is matched to the LED fittings. A mismatched dimmer is the usual cause of flicker and hum. We supply and fit a dimmer rated for the lights we install so it dims smoothly across the full range.

For almost every home, yes. LED fittings run cool, which matters under ceiling insulation, they last for years and they use a fraction of the power. You also choose the colour of the light, warmer for living spaces, cooler and brighter for kitchens and work areas.

Adding lighting circuits or extending wiring is usually permitted and inspected work. As a licensed C-10 contractor we pull the permit where the job requires one and leave the work in a state that passes inspection.

Yes. Lath and plaster ceilings need more care than modern drywall, and older homes can hide old wiring, ducts and framing above the ceiling. We check what is above before we cut and use fittings rated for the ceiling and insulation we find.
